Sky Arrived

Our baby boy, Sky Prentice, arrived April 27th at 2:30 am after 22-hours of labor at home. All of us are doing well, adjusting to our new lives.

At one week old, we took Sky on his first road trip all the way to Florida. It was challenging as expected, but we made it on time for David's work while keeping our family together.

David had a great couple of weeks flying in Florida. You can read his blog on his website, www.earthcog.com. I was fortunate to have help from my pilot friend, Maria. The first few weeks postpartum are tender and require a lot of care and support.

David and I are amazed at the strength of emotion we feel toward our new son. Now we understand the joy of parenthood.

We are now heading back to Albuquerque. I will be available to see patients in June. I am also launching new programs and retreats soon. Check back in a week or two to see what I'm offering. I will continue to travel with David for the next year, which allows me to work all over the world and take care of our family. Although we have plans, we are open to changes that most benefit our son. He is the center of our world, now.

Spring in the Barrio

Hanging out in the hood again feels natural and right. The clinic has an addition to its mural, farmworkers. The traditional healers are organizing the clinic gardens. Spring is here, blossoms blowing off the trees.

I ate lunch at a local restaurant, Los Compadres. I sat alone and watched the bustle. A little girl wandered by to look at the fish in their tank. The cashier helped her get a toy. She ran to her parents in delight. The cashier glowed with happiness. Then, a girl in a wheelchair waited for her mom to pay their bill. An old couple walked by and smiled at her. They asked her what her name was. She struggled to get the word out, and the couple didn't understand, but they kept smiling anyway. The waitresses knew many of the customers, and greeted them by name. I was impressed by the kindness of everyone and their willingness to reach out to one another.

Afterward, I went to the local coffee shop to do internet and my experience deepened. A man counseled a young guy about gangs, drugs, prison, the hard life, the hopes and choices he has in front of him. He talked with experience and compassion. The kid got it. These are the beautiful moments I cherish in life.

Sometimes I imagine my ideal world of living in a small town, in a community where everyone knows and loves each other. It would be a lot like this. The difference would be what we ate. We'd eat raw foods prepared from vegetables and herbs grown in our garden. For now, I enjoy eating my greasy juevos rancheros. It is important to appreciate the here and now of the moment. I don't think it is wrong to imagine other places or circumstances, either, because it guides us in life.

I love my work because I get to witness people's life paths over years. I see their deepest struggles and triumphs. I am always amazed and humbled at the force that drives people forward. All we need is trust it.
